Room Four's top 6 tips for unknown words in texts
  • Look at the picture - it may help me work out the word.
  • Look at the first letter - I can use Jolly Phonics to make the sound. It could help me to work it out.
  • Listen to what I have read - does that sound right, does it make sense?
  • Re-read. Go back to the start of the sentence and try again.
  • Read on. Read on to the end of the sentence - it may help me to work out what the word could be.
  • Break the word up into parts or chunks - can I see a blend or word ending I know that could help me to work it out.
